A Tasmanian man in his early twenties has been told to lawyer up after he pleaded guilty to 15 offences, at least some of which were committed while subject to a suspended jail sentence.

Drink driving: A guide to safe drinking

A Tasmanian man who pleaded guilty to 15 offences has been told by a magistrate to lawyer up, as the presence of a suspended sentence which was breached meant there was a distinct possibility of home detention or actual imprisonment.

Resident of the Huon Valley area, Brodie Scott, 22, pleaded guilty in Hobart Magistrates Court on Friday to 15 offences.

All up, Scott pleaded guilty to two charges of disorderly conduct, two charges of driving while exceeding the prescribed alcohol limit, two charges of failing to appear, two charges of driving with a suspended licence, two charges of driving while not the holder of a licence while alcohol is present in the body, and one each of possessing an opened container of liquor in public, resisting a police officer, breaching a bail condition, failing to display L-plates and driving as a learner unaccompanied by a licensed driver.

The most substantive body of offending was committed on November 4 last year at Donohoe St, Cygnet.

Magistrate Chris Webster told the court that on that occasion, Scott became “disorderly (by) yelling and screaming loudly and throwing his arms around”, resisted arrest by “throwing his arms around to prevent being handcuffed”, and returned a blood-alcohol analysis of 0.059 per cent.

Scott was also busted drink driving in an unrelated incident on Cygnet’s Channel Hwy, where he returned a reading of 0.062 per cent.

Mr Webster questioned why Scott was unrepresented on such serious a set of charges, especially against the context of a three-week suspended sentence hanging over Scott’s head which the prosecution will breach him on.

Upon learning Scott was paying off a mortgage and lived with his partner and young son, Mr Webster indicated he would look at imposing home detention.

The sentence was adjourned for eight weeks until August 8 to enable the production of a home detention report assessing Scott’s suitability for it.
