Rampage: Woman charged after smashing 20+ shop windows

A South Launceston woman has been charged after allegedly smashing windows at more than 25 businesses in the Launceston CBD on Thursday evening.

The 32-year-old woman was found by police at about 8.30pm in the Brisbane Street Mall.

The woman was detained in custody and is expected to face the Launceston Magistrates Court today.

Pictures sighted by the Mercury show extensive damage to a number of stores including the Bonds Outlet store, priceline, Country Road, Adairs and Platypus shoes.

Shards of glass littered the front entrances of the businesses, with other windows that weren’t completely shattered showing large cracks.

“Police would like to thank members of the public for their assistance in reporting this matter and providing video footage,” a Tasmania Police statement said.

Youth nabbed after two weeks on the run

May 7:

A youth who escaped custody and has been on the run for two weeks has been arrested at New Town.

The 17-year-old ran off from Glenorchy while being taken to the Ashley Detention Centre by a private security company on April 23.

Police had conducted multiple searches for the youth and arrested him at a house at New Town in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A police spokesperson said he had been charged with the escape and multiple other charges regarding offences committed while he was on the run.

He was due to appear in court on Saturday.

Search for Holden driver who darted over packed highway, crashed into cop car

May 5: The driver of a silver Holden Commodore is at the centre of an investigation after they were seen darting over a packed Tasmanian highway before crashing into a parked police car.

The dangerous driving incident happened on the Bass Highway between Formby and Middle Roads at Devonport on Monday around 3pm.

The car bears Queensland registration 1GID-076 and police say two occupants were present in the car.

“The driver of the vehicle was observed driving in a dangerous manner through heavy traffic, and has hit a stationery police car which was displaying emergency red and blue flashing lights which was on scene at the crash site,” Tasmania Police Inspector John King said.

“The driver of this vehicle has put the lives of all the emergency service workers who were in attendance at the scene of this crash in danger.

“We remind people to be aware of their surroundings, and to take care when approaching a crash scene where emergency vehicles are clearly present.

“Risking the lives of others through irresponsible driving on our roads will not be tolerated”.

Police hunt for youth after alleged wounding

May 5: A police manhunt for a youth is underway after two teenagers were allegedly wounded in an incident at Clarendon Vale on Thursday night.

Both victims were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police believe the alleged offender is known to the victims.

Police have now launched an appeal to find the alleged offender, and ask for anyone with information to contact police on 131 444, with the reference: ESCAD302-04052023.

Lanes reopen after bridge crash

May 3 – Update:The Tasman Highway at Midway Point is now clear following an earlier crash.

There were “no serious injuries” reported, according to a Tasmania Police statement.

Initial: A crash on McGees Bridge at Midway Point has caused both lanes to be blocked.

Motorists are advised to anticipate delays, or take an alternate route until the scene is cleared.

Tasmania Police in a statement said “no serious injuries have been reported”.

Search for missing Launceston teen enters third day

3.30pm: Police have renewed their request for public information to help locate missing Launceston teenager, Shyanne-Lee Tatnell.

Police said they held concerns for the welfare of 14-year-old Shyanne-Lee, who was last seen in the vicinity of Henry St, Launceston, near the North Esk River, on the night of Sunday, April 30.

Since then, friends and family have been unable to contact Shyanne-Lee, which is out of character.

Shyanne-Lee is described as being approximately 160cm tall, slim build with blonde hair.

At the time she was last seen, she was wearing a cream coloured hooded jumper with dark coloured writing on the chest and shoulder area. She was also wearing bike shorts.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have been in the Henry St area at approximately 8:30pm Sunday and may have seen Shyanne-Lee, or who may have dashcam footage of that area around the time, to come forward.

Structure fire at Bagdad Primary School

Updated – 1.15pm: Parents of students at a Tasmanian school north of Hobart have been urged to pick their children up ‘immediately’ after a fire broke out at the site.

Bagdad Primary School took to Facebook with the announcement, following earlier reports smoke and flames issuing from a building at the school.

The school asked parents to collect their children.

“We have had a small fire at school, which now has been contained,” the post read.

“We would like to ask those who are able to come and pick their children up from the school church immediately,

“All students and staff are on the netball courts. We currently are unable to take phone calls.”

The post has been shared dozens of times.

Firefighters were initially called to School Rd just after midday after TFS were advised of “smoke and flames” coming from a building at the address.

Initial – 12.30pm: Firefighters raced to the scene of a fire at a non-residential structure on School Rd at Bagdad.

A Tasmania Fire Service spokeswoman said crews from Bagdad, Bridgewater and Brighton had been called to tackle the blaze, which was now “knocked down”.

“Tasmania Fire Service have been advised by occupants of smoke and flames issuing from a building,” an initial statement read.

Firey’s equipped with breathing apparatus have since entered the building to ensure the fire was put out.

Teenager remanded after alleged courthouse assaults

May 3:

A 16-year-old girl was remanded in custody after allegedly unleashing a tirade of abuse on multiple people at Hobart Magistrates Court, including verbally abusing a magistrate.

The girl was on bail and at court for an appearance on Tuesday, May 2, when she allegedly assaulted a Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management prosecutor, a youth justice worker and a security guard.

The girl then allegedly verbally abused the presiding magistrate.

She was charged with common assault and assault a public officer over the alleged incident.

Commander Jason Elmer said this type of behaviour was “completely unacceptable”.

“For an incident of this nature to occur within the court precinct and for alleged assaults on people who are just at work trying to do their jobs is extremely concerning,” he said.

The girl was remanded in custody and will appear via videolink on a date later this month.

Two days and still missing: Police search for 14yo girl

May 2:

Tasmania Police have launched a search for a teenage girl who has been missing for two days.

14-year-old Shyanne-Lee was last seen about 8.15pm on Sunday near Tamar and Brisbane Streets in Launceston.

The teenager is about 160cm tall with a slim build. She was last seen wearing a white hooded jumper, with the hood up, police say.

‘Think again’: Licences stripped from high range drink drivers

May 1: Two drink drivers have been slapped with charges after recording high blood alcohol readings at the weekend.

On Friday about 11.20pm, police pulled over a male driver on Old Main Rd at Bridgewater. He returned a high reading of 0.286, was charged with drink driving and was disqualified from driving for two years on the spot.

About 6.25pm on Sunday, a 30-year-old male driver crashed into a parked car on Blackwood Pde at Romaine.

Police attended the scene and the driver recorded a reading of 0.260.

He was charged with drink driving and disqualified from driving for one year.

Tasmania’s state road safety co-ordinator, Inspector Gary Williams, reminded motorists that the consequences of drink driving were deadly serious.

“With two high range drink drivers detected over the weekend, it’s timely to remind all motorists of the very real dangers of driving under the influence,” Insp Williams said.

“When a driver gets behind the wheel under the influence, they face the very real risk of crashing and killing or seriously injuring themselves, and others.”

He said he “implored” any motorist who thought driving intoxicated was acceptable to “think again”.

“We all have a part to play in keeping everyone safe on our roads – not just police,” he said.


Major road choked after crash closes southbound lane

Monday, May 1: A major thoroughfare in Launceston is closed after a car crash shut down a southbound lane.

Police and emergency services responded to the single-vehicle crash shortly after 11am on Monday on Launceston’s Southern Outlet, near McDonalds in South Launceston.

Police are asking motorists to avoid the area until the crash site is clear.

No injuries have been reported.

Major Hobart intersection cleared after vehicle rollover

Sunday, April 30, noon: The earlier vehicle rollover on Creek Rd at New Town, near the intersection of Main Rd, has now been cleared.

Sunday, April 30, 11.15am: Emergency Services are currently on the scene of a single vehicle rollover on Creek Rd near Main Rd, New Town.

There is a current road closure at the intersection and no traffic will be able to access Creek Road from Main Road.

There are no serious injuries reported at this time.
