Police are confident they know who is responsible for a spate of break-ins in Blackmans Bay in recent days.

Officers have contacted victims of more than 30 incidents reported last weekend and on Monday to tell them they had collected enough evidence from CCTV security systems to identify the man they believe is responsible and are actively looking for him.

Earlier in the week Tasmania Police called for witnesses on social media following dozens of break-ins.

“We are investigating multiple car and home burglaries reported in the Blackmans Bay area,” the post said

“A number of houses and vehicles were unlawfully entered in the area of Timbertop Drive, Honeysuckle Drive, Diamond Drive and Ash Drive, Blackmans Bay between 5 and 8 May.”

Police sa️id property stolen included money, wallets and handbags, tools, keys, laptops, and jewellery.

They urged anyone who saw any suspicious behaviour or had CCTV footage to call Kingston CIB on 131444.

One victim reported that someone had smashed the window of his father’s ute and taken a wallet and there are reports a thief had broken into one home while the owners were present, had taken car keys and then driven away in a car parked on the property.

The incidents sparked calls for a greater police presence in the Kingborough municipality, including an appeal to have Kingston Police Station staffed 24/7.

“The police station is not manned 24hrs in Kingston unfortunately. They have to come from Hobart. Bloody ridiculous!” wrote Amelia Edmand.

Some suggested residents call for action from Police Minister Felix Ellis.

“How about each and every person reading this writes their own letter to the Minister for Police. Having personal letters written in your own voice will have a much greater impact than a form letter,” Jenny Jones said.
