An eye witness has described the moment a car cleared a fence and ended up upside-down a Glenorchy rivulet on Tuesday.
A car flipped into a rivulet adjacent to the Northgate Plaza in Glenorchy before 1.30pm – managing to push through a fence in the process.
The crash reportedly happened right in front of Barry Shepherd who said a work crew nearby were quick to leap into action.
“I pulled into the car park and saw him get into the car – he got in and put his seat belt on and instead of reversing out, he went straight forward up over a gutter, through the wire fence and into the canal,” he said.
“I thought “what the hell?” – the wire fence slowed him down because he took off pretty fast.
“I jumped out and looked over and there were a heap of guys doing some work out there.
“They rushed over tore the door open and got him out.
“Within a few minutes the cops were there and then the fire brigade and ambulance.”
Police are investigating exactly what happened but photos from the scene show a damaged railing near the upside down car.
Despite the car coming to a rest on its roof in the water, Tasmania Police said no one was believed to be injured.
