Anthony Debelin: Launceston teen remanded in custody after guilty pleas

A Tasmanian teen will remain behind bars after pleading guilty to terrorizing businesses in the northern suburbs with repeated thefts, from sausage rolls and flavoured milk right up to hundreds of dollars worth of meat products.

Mayfield man Anthony Dabs Debelin, 19, pleaded guilty earlier this month in Launceston Magistrates Court to at least 14 offences, mostly shop thefts but also trespass, injuring property and breaching bail conditions.

Debelin has been remanded in pre-sentence custody since late March.A bail application made on March 30 was refused on the basis of Debelin being an unacceptable risk of reoffending.

In addition to the offences Debelin pleaded guilty to, he also has additional outstanding charges before the Magistrates Court.

Court documents reveal the current offences to which Debelin pleaded guilty to were committed between November last year and his remand in custody in late March.

Most significantly, Debelin admitted to stealing $568 worth of meat products from Woolworths Mowbray on January 28.

He also pleaded guilty to stealing a pack of Adidas socks worth $25 from Red Herring Surf Co Launceston on January 28; perfume worth $59.99 from Chemist Warehouse Mowbray, where he also trespassed, as well as a sausage roll worth $4.60 from BP Newnham, on March 23; smashing a glass sliding door at Boland’s IGA Newnham and breaching bail three times, also on March 23; stealing mobile phone cases worth $80 on November 26 last year from Ask Mobiles Launceston; and stealing flavoured milk, chocolate bars and pies from BP and IGA Newnham on February 17.

Debelin will be sentenced on April 29.

EARLIER, MARCH 30: A Launceston teenager has failed in his bid for freedom after he was charged with multiple counts of stealing and breaching bail.

Mayfield man Anthony Debelin, 19, was charged with eight offences following his arrest on Monday evening.

Tasmania police allege in court documents obtained by The Mercury that on March 5 in Mayfield, Mr Debelin was found in possession of a bottle of Johnny Walker red label whisky suspected of being stolen property.

They further allege in court documents that on March 23, Mr Debelin breached bail conditions imposed in Launceston Magistrates Court on February 25 on three occasions.

That same day at Boland’s IGA Newnham, it’s alleged he smashed a sliding-glass door, while he also allegedly stole a sausage roll from BP Newnham.

It’s further alleged in court documents that on the same day, Mr Debelin attended Chemist Warehouse Mowbray where he trespassed and stole a bottle of perfume worth $59.95.

Magistrate Simon Brown refused the application for bail, finding he was an unacceptable risk of reoffending.

Mr Debelin was remanded in pre-sentence custody until next Thursday, where he will enter pleas on the eight current charges as well as dozens of previous dishonesty, property and breach offences alleged to have been committed between October last year and February.
