A small earth tremor has been felt near Stanley in Tasmania’s North-West. But, fear not, it wasn’t strong enough to crack The Nut.

A MINOR earthquake has been recorded off Tasmania’s North-West Coast.

Geoscience Australia measured the tremor at magnitude 2.5 on the Richter scale, with the epicentre near Stanley and Sisters Beach.

Stanley resident Rachael Woods was awake in bed when the earthquake hit just before 10.30pm.

“I just felt a great big rumble and the house shook,” she said.

“I didn’t know what was going on. I had a friend message me and she said ‘what was that’.”

Ms Woods said it was the first earthquake she had ever experienced after several years living in the area.

“I’ve never felt anything like that before and a lot of people I’ve spoken to said they haven’t felt one either.”

Ms Woods said the tremor was a big talking point on Facebook.

But it wasn’t felt by everyone.

Circular Head tourism manager Kim Bailey said she hadn’t noticed the earthquake further inland at her home in Smithton.
