NEW South Wales man Tim Strange is about to make a lot of friends after today being announced as the winner of 150 plane tickets to Tasmania for Launceston’s Mona Foma.

Mona’s summer music and arts festival held an online competition for punters to use clues to find the purple and yellow Air Mofo plane on a digital map of Tasmania.

The prize, valued at $99,000, included the private use of a passenger plane for a return trip to Tasmania for 150 people as well as Mona Foma festival passes for everyone on board.

Competitors had from October 10-14 to find the plane.

When the competition went live, it took Tim Strange, from Woonona near Woollongong, only 1 minute and 40 seconds to find an image of the plane on the interactive map.

Mr Strange found it marked when he zoomed in on Lake Mikany near Smithton in the state’s North West.

He spent six days scouring clues and marking up prospective locations on a map after the competition was announced on October 4.

Clues to the Air Mofo plane’s location on the map were found in festival ads and on the Mona Foma website.

Mr Strange now has one month to organise 149 people to fly with him.

Mona Foma curator Brian Ritchie said in the modern world, most people could count their friends on both hands.

“So you’ll need 30 hands if you’re gonna fill up your winning Air Mofo flight,” he said.

In total, more than a million minutes were spent searching for Air Mofo.

Air Mofo passengers can expect more than your average plane ride, with Mona Foma-inspired in-flight entertainment and performances set to make the trip one to remember.

“I’m pretty sure this has never been done before,” said Tourism Tasmania CEO John Fitzgerald.

“There’s probably a good reason for that. Nonetheless, hopefully this promo gets mainlanders exploring every square satellite metre of our amazing island.”

Mona Foma will take over Launceston from January 11-19, 2020.

The festival program will be launched on Friday morning.
