A police investigation is underway into how a video of a shocking shark attack that took the leg of a young surfer was leaked online.

Chilling shark attack video leaks from police station

Video of the shocking moment a young surfer was attacked by a shark has been leaked online, triggering an internal police investigation.

The video appears to be of a computer screen inside a police facility, and shows the moment Kai McKenzie, 23, was set upon by a great white shark on North Shore Beach in Port Macquarie on the Mid North Coast of NSW last Tuesday.

McKenzie lost his right leg in the attack.

His injured leg was wrapped in a dog leash to stop the bleeding, before he was flown to hospital.

His leg was recovered on the beach but could not be reattached.

The video shows the experienced surfer trying to paddle back to shore away from the shark, in what appears to be waist-deep water.

The shark, believed to be a three-metre great white, lunges at the surfer from behind.

The shark’s fin thrashes about in the water near McKenzie.

The leaked vision shows the moments in the lead-up to the attack.

NSW Police have confirmed an internal investigation is underway, The Daily Telegraph reported.

“NSW Police are aware of the video circulating online and have commenced an investigation into how the video came to be released,” police said in a statement.

“The NSWPF does not tolerate this kind of conduct and will take appropriate action pending the outcome of the investigation.”

The probe will be led by the force’s professional standards command – tasked with investigating police officers and their conduct.

After undergoing major surgery at John Hunter Hospital, McKenzie, from Bonny Hills, took to Instagram on Saturday morning to thank everyone for their support following the “crazy shark attack”, which he said “scared the living f*ck out of” him.

“Man ohh f*cking man to be here right now, just to f*cking be able to hold my beautiful Eve and my family is everything to me,” he said.

“To all you f*cking kind-hearted people, all you legends, to anyone and everyone all your support has meant the absolute world to me. It’s so cool to see so many beautiful people support me.”

He vowed to return to the water.
