Sneaky ways to restore Instagram feeds to their former glory have been revealed after the social media site became the target of an angry army of users.
A 2016 update saw the Instagram ditch chronological ordered posts in favour of algorithm-based feeds saturated with recommended posts – a move that harmed influencers and passive users alike.
The app has in recent times favoured video content in lieu of photos, and has been accused of trying to be too much like video sharing platform TikTok.
Such matters have now formed the foundation of a petition established by artist Tati Bruening titled “make Instagram Instagram again”.
The petition, which has been signed by almost 200,000 people since Saturday, has demanded the return of the chronological timeline, an algorithm that favours photos, and for Instagram to listen to its creators and “stop trying to be TikTok”.
“There’s no need to overcomplicate things, we just want to see when our friends post, the beauty of Instagram was that it was INSTAntaneous,” part of the petition read.
“Back in the dawn of the app we were all living in the moment, seeing our best moments in real time.”
For people fed up with the endless stream of recommended posts, there are a few ways to manipulate the app to see only things you’re interested in.
How to view preferred posts
Posts that appear in the feed as “suggested” can be removed by users for up to 30 days at a time by adopting a cheeky hack.
By selecting the three dots in the top right hand corner of suggested posts, users can choose to select “not interested”.
Instagram will then hide the post and offer a menu of choices, including an option to “snooze all suggested posts in feed for 30 days”.
The technique will need to be executed again after the 30-day period.
Remove ads
Users can enjoy an ad-free experience by logging into their Instagram account via a web browser.
By scrolling through the app on the browser, it won’t show Reels or recommended posts, similar to the user experience prior to 2016.
