Canberra crowned the world’s best at Wordle
A surprising city in Australia has been named the best in the world at the highly-addictive guessing game ‘Wordle’.
Canberra has been crowned the world’s best city at Wordle, the popular word game.
Three other Australian cities – Perth, Melbourne, and Adelaide – also made the world’s top ten, according to data from Wordtips.
Overall, the website says that Australia is fourth-best in the world at Wordle, beaten out by Scandinavia’s Sweden, Denmark, and Finland.
Wordtips says the data comes from user-tweeted results presented in the game’s iconic emoji grid format, with the tweets filtered by location and the hashtag #wordle.
This user-share function – the instantly recognisable, attention-grabbing grid – is regarded by some as the secret to the app’s meteoric success.
Canberrans, on average, took 3.58 guesses per game to get the five-letter word.
Jerusalem in Israel, Malmӧ in Sweden and Durban in South Africa were the next-best cities with an average 3.66 guesses per game.
“We suspect that to a very niche and very passionate nerd minority” – clearly a thinly veiled reference to Canberrans – “these figures count for a lot,” the website wrote.
Brisbane (3.95) and the Gold Coast (4.2) both needed more guesses than the world average to solve their daily Wordle puzzle.
Wordle was purchased by The New York Times for an undisclosed seven-digit sum at the end of January.
This is not the first time Canberra has been first position in world rankings: the Aussie capital frequently ranks highest in liveability rankings and is considered one of the world’s most vaccinated cities against Covid-19.
