REVIEW

It’s that time of year, Apple has refreshed the iPhone with some new features and colours to choose from. Enter the iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.

Unfortunately, with all new iPhone releases there will be some tired criticisms made about the ‘lack’ of differences in the product but let me shine a light on the new and hidden features of the iPhone 15 series.

iPhone 15 and 15 Plus – What’s new?

The new 6.1-inch iPhone 15 and 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus come in fun colours including Blue, Pink, Yellow, Green and Black. These new, pastel, colours wrap around the phone. The back is a new colour-infused matte glass (meaning no fingerprints!) and the edges, although made of aluminium are also coloured.

Without a case, although these devices look highly similar to the previous generation, they’re stunning and fun and their rounded edges make them feel great in hand. Apple has also brought their handy software/hardware ‘Dynamic Island’ feature from last year’s premium iPhone 14 Pro models to the iPhone 15.

The cameras on the iPhone 15 have also been upgraded to a 48MP camera and 24MP camera with an improved 2x Telephoto option.

This brings improvements in image and video quality, low light photography and the addition of a feature that offers the ability to shift the focus of a photo between the foreground and background after a photo is taken.

However, one of my favourite additions is the switch to a USB-C port over Apple’s Lightning port, which also hides some extra functionality.

There’s now the ability to plug the included and new braided USB-C to USB-C cable into your iPhone 15 and plug the other end into the new Gen 2 USB-C AirPods Pro so your iPhone can charge them. You can also charge other iPhones and devices this way!

iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max – New innovations

The iPhone 15 Pro models gain all the features previously mentioned but have also had a major change to the materials the phone is made from.

These devices possess the new rounded edge design, with aluminium, except this phone is also made with a new material – titanium.

It’s a strong yet lightweight material, which happens to also reduce the overall heft of the iPhone, and the iPhone Pro models are usually rather weighty.

They also have a premium look with their new Natural Titanium, Blue, White and Black colours.

And unlike the baseline iPhone 15s, the iconic ‘mute switch’ on the side of the iPhone has been replaced with a programmable button which can function as per usual or be used to offer more optional functionality such as quickly activating the camera or focus modes.

The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max have also switched to USB-C, except the Pro models have faster USB 3 speeds.

Along with the A17 Bionic chip, this also allows users the game changing ability to record high quality footage directly to an external storage device, when plugged into the iPhone 15 Pro via USB-C.

Overall, the new iPhone 15 models are a pleasant and powerful upgrade for those users looking for an upgrade to the cameras, an improved design with the addition of an increase in overall performance, power and functionality, whilst retaining the water and dust resistance of last year’s models.

The iPhone 15 with a 6.10-inch display starts at $1499, the iPhone 15 Plus with a 6.7-inch starts from $1649, the iPhone 15 Pro with a 6.1-inch display starts at $1849 and the iPhone 15 Pro Max with a 6.7” display starts at $2199.
