Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred: Man’s body found in NSW floodwater
The tragic death in NSW floodwaters marks the first loss of life amid ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
Tropical Cyclone Alfred has been downgraded to a tropical low shortly after its first landfall — hitting Queensland’s Moreton Island, overnight.
The ex-tropical cyclone is “essentially stalled for the moment” off the coast of Bribie Island, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said in a Saturday afternoon update.
“It is expected to move towards and cross the mainland coast between Maroochydore and Caboolture later today,” BOM wrote.
Though it’s been downgraded, the system won’t pack any less of a punch over the coming days.
“The impacts are still going to be the same,” BOM meteorologist Helen Reid told ABC Radio Brisbane.
“Still a lot of rainfall to come through. Those floods are still going to be a problem, and we are also still going to be seeing those waves crashing in. If anything, the only thing we’ve lost is that consistency of gale strength winds. We will still have winds that will be damaging or even destructive.”
Over 270,000 people were left without power in southeast Queensland as of 3.15pm AEST Saturday, according to Energex.
Across the border in NSW, over 42,600 homes and businesses are without power, Essential Energy said in its latest update at 11am on Saturday.
