Fines ‘unlikely’ to be issued to drivers caught by speed cameras while fleeing bushfires in Beaufort

More than 30 residents were caught by speed cameras as they fled their homes during a “leave now” bushfire alert.

Dozens of speeding fines are expected to be waived after residents fleeing bushfires were caught by speed cameras.

Beaufort locals received a “leave now” bushfire alert on February 13 as fires ravaged Western Victoria.

However, 31 motorists were snapped up by speed cameras as they left the area seeking safety.

Victoria Police have confirmed while there was one camera operating, it’s “unlikely” fines would be issued.

“Victoria Police has a precedent of not issuing fines of this nature during natural disasters when justified,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

“While we will review any offences, it is unlikely any fines will be issued at this location on this day.

“There were a total 31 detections none of which have been processed.”

It comes after Premier Jacinta Allan confirmed more than 14,000ha in Victoria’s west had been impacted by fires.

“‘Leave immediately’ and ‘not safe to return’ warnings are still in place for a number of communities,” the Premier posted to Instagram on February 23.

“Tonight, I’m thinking of everyone who can’t get home. And all of the incredible first responders who’ll spend the weekend working hard to keep everyone safe.

“Please take care. And please stay across the warnings: emergency.vic.gov.au”
