$25m to be put into trialling ways to reduce teachers’ stress

Tassie’s top performing schools for NAPLAN have been revealed, with Years 5 and 9 students proving their might among the nation’s brightest.

An independent analysis of five years of NAPLAN results show the schools which consistently performed the best in the Year 5 and Year 9 tests between 2017 and 2021.

Over that five-year period, Albuera Street Primary School, in Battery Point, had higher Year 5 yearly results than any other school in Tasmania, scoring an average of 2702.75 each year.

Principal Joanne Waldon said Albuera Street Primary “fosters students who are engaged in their learning and work together with their teachers”.

“Families are supportive which makes a big difference in student attitudes as well as teachers who believe in our students’ ability to learn and improve,” Ms Waldon said.

“Our school also has a focus on student agency in which students are active and reflective participants in their own learning.”

South Hobart Primary School in South Hobart was the second best for the state with an average score of 2696.25, while Mount Nelson Primary School in Mount Nelson was the third best with an average score of 2677.25.

The Launceston Preparatory School was the only non-Hobart school to make the Top 10 for Year 5 results, scoring an average of 2620.75 each year.

For Year 9, Hobart region schools nabbed six of the top 10 spots, with Launceston region schools claiming the remaining four.

The top performing Year 9 school in Tasmania was Launceston’s John Calvin School, where the average yearly result was 3131.8 over the five years.

In Hobart, the top performing Year 9 school was Fahan School in Sandy Bay, where the average yearly result was 3086.8 over the five years.

Principal of Fahan School Meg Lawson was enthused by the result, but cautioned that NAPLAN was just one measure of a school’s success.

“We are very pleased by our results across the school as we do take a lot of time to ensure that our programs are constantly being reviewed,” she said.

“Of course, NAPLAN is one test on one day and it is not a measure of all that makes up the character of a child. At Fahan, this is fostered in many different ways, not just academically.

“Our students work very hard and our excellent teaching staff are truly dedicated to their profession.”

The Friends’ School in North Hobart was the second best for the region with an average score of 3084.3, while St Michael’s Collegiate School in Hobart was the third best with an average score of 3083.0.

Taroona High School was the only state school that made the top 10, where the average yearly score was 3003.5.

For Year 5, Forth Primary School was the top-performing school in Tassie’s North-West, while Ulverstone’s Leighland Christian School was the top-performing for Year 9 results.

To determine how each school performed between 2017 and 2021, their average scores for each year were combined and the yearly average found.

Special schools, schools with fewer than 20 students enrolled in either year, and schools that did not report any results for NAPLAN subjects in either year were excluded from the analysis.

The figures were independently compiled from the Federal Government’s MySchool website.
