THERE’S been a netball pay rise, the naming of a new league, a fashion update and signings galore in the W-League, WBBL and AFL.
An Aussie has been carving up her competition in surfing, equestrian Edwina Tops Alexander is still within distance of a big win and the Sydney Flames have suffered an injury setback.

ALL FROCKED UP
Some of our top rugby league talent have previewed their outfits for the Dally M’s and they are not like any uniform you have ever seen before.
The only studs are in ears and taffeta, silk and lace has replacing breathable sports fabric.
We wish out Jillaroos stars Samantha Bremner, Kezie Apps, Ruan Sims and Simaima Taufa all the best in their race for the Dally M women’s award next week.
THUNDER STRIKE AGAIN
Reigning WBBL Women’s Big Bash League champs Sydney Thunder have extended the contracts of a trio of Southern Stars in Nicola Carey, Lauren Cheatle and Naomi Stalenberg.
All three used the WBBL to launch themselves into he Australian team last season.
Carey’s was called into the Southern Stars squad for the ICC World T20 in India as an injury replacement.
Also at the ICC World T20 was schoolgirl Cheatle, who exploded onto the state and international scene last season.
Naomi Stalenberg also earned a Southern Stars call-up due to her form.
NETBALL PAY DEAL: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
It’s a new game for the biggest female participant sport in Australia.
Details have finally been released ahead of the new national netball league which will be played in 2017.

EDWINA STILL IN THE HUNT
Olympian Edwina Tops Alexander remains within striking distance of her third Longines Global Champions Tour crown heading into the final event of the tour in Doha in November.
The Australian is ranked second overall and just five points behind the tour leader, Swede Rolf-Goran Bengtsson Sweden.
A FAREWELL AND A BRONZE MEDAL
Triple Olympian Emma Moffatt finished her Olympic distance career in Mexico on the weekend as Charlotte McShane broke through for her first World Series podium
Moffatt has now pulled stumps on Olympic racing after two world titles and an Olympic bronze.
Moffatt finished sixth at this year’s Rio Olympics.
One the same day Moffatt retired McShane raced to third in the World Series race in Mexico in an encouraging sign for the future.
AFL NAMES IT’S LEAGUE
It’s not exactly imaginative but at least you won’t be confused about what league this is.
The AFL has launched AFL Women’s as the official name of the new national women’s league in 2017.
AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan, said the new name was developed in consultation with past and present players and the Women’s Football Advisory Group.
SURFING SUCCESS AND SIGNINGS
Tyler Wright is closing in on a maiden world crown after beating fellow Aussie Stephanie Gilmore in the Swatch Pro at Trestles.
If things go her way and against her main rivals, Wright could secure the world crown in Portugal later this month.
Closer to home world surf league competitors Laura Enever from Sydney and Coco Ho from the US have signed on for Sydney International Women’s Pro which is part of Sally Fitzgibbons’ International Beach Festival,
This four day event will be played out at Cronulla in November.
ROAD RACE GOLD TO OLYMPIAN
Eloise Wellings claimed victory in the Australian Road Running Championships in Adelaide on Sunday, dominating the 12km course in 39:07.
“I’m stoked. I felt really good out there despite a huge headwind. If I had of known I was going to feel that good I probably would have planned to have a crack at the record,” Wellings said.
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP CALL-UP
Australia will field a powerful line-up of women at the world road cycling championships in Doha Qatar in October.
Australian women claimed five World Tour victories this season and are expected to be a force in the race.
Expected to play a major role for the Aussies is Chloe Hosking, who has notched six major wins this year including La Course and a stage at the Giro Rosa.
Joining her in the team is reigning national time trial champion Katrin Garfoot, Rio Olympian Gracie Elvin, Tiffany Cromwell, Loren Rowney and Sarah Roy.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
AGGRESSIVE scouting from AFL and NRL backed clubs may cream talent from NSW but the Swifts and GWS Giants netball teams will feature international stars and have the local talent to be bona fide contenders for the inaugural national netball league according to the sports boss.
IF bad luck comes in three’s then the Sydney University Flames are due a change in fortunes.
In a major blow to Sydney’s only national league basketball side, star point guard Tahlia Tupaea is out of the game until around Christmas after undergoing surgery on her foot on Thursday.
The news follows on from the delayed arrival of the Flames’ second American import Asia Taylor after she was offered a late stint in the WNBA with the Connecticut Suns, and an injury to Lauren Nicholson (fractured tibia). MORE HERE
