THREE more Hobart-based sporting clubs will receive a significant injection of federal funding to upgrade facilities at their home venues.

On the back of Thursday’s announcement, the Federal Government will invest close to $13 million to build a northern suburbs junior soccer hub in Chigwell — the largest single investment in soccer in Tasmania — a further $350,000 has been allocated to upgrade the facilities at the Taroona Football Club.

Glenorchy’s Eady Street, home to Southern Cricket Association club Wellington and the Glenorchy Rugby Union Football Club, have also landed a $1 million package.

Both announcements yesterday were secured with the help of Clark independent MP Andrew Wilkie.

“The new facility is expected to boast enhanced function and club space, changerooms and kitchens,” Mr Wilkie said of the funding allocated for Eady Street.

On the upgrades at Taroona Football Club, he said: “This is a much-needed investment in Taroona Football Club’s changerooms and spectator facilities.

“Thanks to $350,000 from the Federal Government, the club will be able to provide sheltered facilities which will allow them to attract more spectators from the Taroona community and beyond.

“They will also be able to build better change rooms which will mean separate facilities for female players, further boosting women and girls’ participation in sport.”
