Tasmania has secured the services of star big man Will Magnay for a further two seasons with the dominating centre putting pen to paper on a new two year deal.
In a major boost for the JackJumpers heading into Monday’s must-win game two semi-final against Perth, Magnay’s new deal ties him to the club until at least the end of the 2025/26 NBL season.
After struggling with injuries troubles during different stages of his tenure as a JackJumpers player, Magnay has proved on more than one occasion his importance to the NBL’s newest franchise throughout this season.
A finalist in two NBL24 Awards, Magnay has found continuity since returning from injury, making a significant impact both offensively and defensively across 20 games so far in NBL24.
“I am thrilled to continue my journey with Tasmania,” Magnay said of his decision to re-sign.
“The support from the fans and the organisation has been incredible, it’s like no other place in the world and I can’t wait to continue to grow here and bring a championship to the state.”
A longtime supporter of the 25 year-old throughout his time in Tasmania, JackJumpers coach Scott Roth said Magnay had only just scratched the surface of his talents despite already making it to the NBA.
“He’s a beast, there’s no other way to say it,” Roth said.
“He’s got his body healthy, and I think we’re only just scratching the surface of what he can do and what he can achieve here.
“I’m excited to have his contract locked away and to continue with him as a key part of the group into the future.”
Magnay’s importance to Tasmania’s championship aspirations was highlighted by his career-best performance against Illawarra on February 28 where he finished with 25 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks in the seeding qualifier win.
It was off the back of that performance that had NBL great Andrew Gaze talking up his chances for a place in the Boomers squad for the Paris Olympic Games later this year.
“He’d certainly be in the mix,” Gaze told this masthead on Thursday.
“It depends on who is available, it depends on who’s going to be there, but he’s certainly on my depth chart and one I’d be having a very close look at.”
Magnay finished the 89-81 loss to Perth on Friday with eight points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
