Pole position will be worth its weight in gold at Symmons Plains at the weekend and championship leader Will Brown hopes it’s his Red Bull racer in the box seat for the fourth round of the Supercars championship in Tasmania.
Brown held onto his series lead heading to Tassie despite a dirty weekend in New Zealand where he finished, fifth, seventh and eighth respectively in the three sprint races at Taupo International.
It was a door-banging battle across the Tasman and Brown expects the contact to intensity on the smallest track in the championship.
“I’m sure there’s going to be some biff and barge – we’re seen it all year,” he said.
“People are definitely getting their elbows out now and it has made the racing really exciting.
“It’s great when you qualify up the front and you get out of it.
“But when you qualify around that mid-pack it definitely gets ‘exciting’ out there”
Brown heads to Tassie leading the championship on 651 points, followed by Cam Waters (Tickford Mustang) 617, Matt Payne (Penrite Racing Mustang) 605, Broc Feeney (Red Bull Camaro) 590 and Mostert (Walkinshaw Mustang) 565.
“Hopefully for us we can bounce back,” Brown said.
“We didn’t have the strongest showing in New Zealand but we still probably made the best of a bad weekend.
“I’m still leading the championship but I would love to get down to Tassie and hopefully win some races and I’d love to get a pole position.”
It will be the third time the Mustang and Camaro cars have gone into battle at Symmons.
“I think everyone has gotten on top of their G3 cars and each team has gotten more competitive – there are really no bad teams anymore,” Brown said.
“Back 2017 and 2018, when you could design parts and all that, there were teams like Red Bull Ampol that were ahead of the game.
“Now everyone’s got the same parts, everyone’s getting on top of their set-up, so it’s just making every weekend so close.
“You literally make a little mistake in qualifying and you’re 15th, where that didn’t used to be the case.
“It’s making for new winners each week, new people up there each weekend, and hopefully this round we can be the one.”
