FORMER Sri Lankan underage representative Nuwan Kavinda has carved his way into some illustrious company at University with a standout performance against New Town on Saturday.
The 27-year-old – who boasts a first-class century from 18 appearances for Singhalese Sports Club in his home country – became just the fourth Lion to score a CTPL double century to stamp his credentials in the competition.
Kavinda’s epic unbeaten 203 (207 balls, 29 boundaries) saw him join former Tasmanian great Jamie Cox (215 not out), Rhett Lockyear (204) and Eldine Baptiste (200 not out) as the only players to reach the milestone for Uni.
His efforts saw the Lions easily overhaul their 200-run target, with Kavinda getting the better of the international battle against former Zimbabwean player and Bucks coach Tawanda Mupariwa.
University declared on 9-365 when their star signing, who crossed from Glenorchy in the off-season, registered his double ton, with the visitors progressing to 2-80 when stumps were drawn.
Back-up Sheffield Shield keeper Jake Doran narrowly missed reaching three figures for North Hobart at the Twin Ovals but the Demons secured a thrilling victory against Kingborough.
Chasing the Knights’ 8-355 declared, the visitors overhauled the target in the dying stages of the day to capture a two-wicket win.
Jack White (61) and Caleb Jewell (68) set the foundation with a 124-run stand for the second wicket only to both fall with the score on 140, before Doran took over to lead the charge.
He reached 93 before falling to Tigers teammate Beau Webster with 62 runs still required, but Robb Macmillan (28 not out) and Corey Murfet (33 not out) guided North across the line with two overs spare.
Lindisfarne kept its unbeaten record in tact with an equally impressive run chase at the NTCA ground.
THE LATEST FROM DAY THREE: AUSTRALIA VS PAKISTAN
Having scored at a tick more than two runs an over last week in reaching 5-214, Greater Northern batted on to reach 6-307 before the declaration came, with opener Brodie Hayes carrying his bat for a masterful unbeaten 156.
The Lightning’s power packed batting line up of Ben McDermott (98 not out from 92 balls) Mac Wright (74 from 62), Charlie Wakim (56 off 59) and Keegan Oates (57 from 61) then mowed down the target in the 54th over, with McDermott finishing things in style with a six in the four wicket win.
