THIS weekend marks the first time in the UFC’s 22-year history that two female fights have topped one of their pay per view events.
It will be a momentous occasion for the sport — and women’s sport in general — when Ronda Rousey puts her woman’s bantamweight title on the line against No. 1 contender Cat Zingano and, in the co-main event, boxing champion Holly Holm makes her debut against Raquel Pennington.
Hollywood actress Gina Carano is a big reason it has all become possible.
Regarded as a pioneer for women in mixed martial arts, Carano was involved in the first ever sanctioned female MMA bout in 2006.
The Haywire star would go on to win seven of her eight professional bouts, before focusing on her film career.
Ahead of this weekend’s historic UFC 184, mmafighting.com reporter Ariel Helwani sent out a tweet asking what Carano “thinks of it all”.
Wondering if a weekend like this is even possible w/o @ginacarano doing what she did a few years back (doubtful) & what she thinks of it all
