A native Tasmanian, Sharp started in television for Channel 0 in Melbourne in the 1960s and former colleague, now race-calling doyen Colin McNiff, new of “Sharpy” even before they worked together at WIN TV.

“As a young boy growing up in Melbourne, I remember watching Peter on Channel 0 and also calling the VFA football every Sunday afternoon,” McNiff said.

Sharp’s career in Hobart started at 7HO, which was in the same building as TVT6 in New Town

“I worked with him for about 17 years and learned more about TV from Peter than anybody else,” McNiff said.

“He taught me that TV can be fun, and it doesn’t have to be taken too seriously and to enjoy myself.

“He was a really good mentor even though I don’t think he was even trying to be.

“He was a really good colleague and a really good mate, who always had your back.”
