Speedy forward Lucy Thompson’s goal in the dying stages delivered the Devils victory in a thriller against SANFL club Norwood at the Twin Ovals on Sunday to give the Tasmanian women’s senior team its first win in 12 years.
The contest was tight throughout and the stage was set for a heart-stopper when they were locked at 21-apiece a few minutes into the final term.
Norwood controlled the ball for much of the quarter and peppered the goals to jump out to a nine-point lead.
Thompson, 18, came to the rescue with a goal midway through the term and then another with less than two minutes to play.
Norwood surged late but the Devils’ backline held strong and Thompson was the toast of the team.
“I wasn’t really expecting that, to the honest, I was just trying to get the ball forward and get the job done,” Thompson said.
“The girls have done really well.
“It was me who kicked the goal but I couldn’t have done it without them.”
Captain Sarah Skinner was outstanding as Devils leader and the win gives Tasmania a much-needed shot of confidence ahead of their next game against Port Melbourne’s VFL team at UTAS Stadium on March 15.
“It was pretty cool to get this win,” White said.
“Norwood is a very respected team so it shows really positive signs for our Tasmanian team heading forward.”
A delighted Tasmania coach Jodie Clifford’s heart was in her mouth in the dying seconds.
“I don’t think I get paid enough to coach games like that,” she said.
“For our guys to stand up and defy expectations _ we haven’t had a good trot in our state games in the past few years, being 0-3 _ so it’s nice to come out and win our first game of the season.”
