Aussie ‘animal’ Jordan Thompson rocks tennis with freakish night

The tennis world has had its jaw dropped by Aussie tennis star Jordan Thompson’s 3am feat on a night that won’t be forgotten.

Jordan Thompson has left jaws dropping around the world after the Aussie pulled off an insane feat at the Los Cabos Open on Sunday night.

Thompson broke through for his first career ATP Tour title at the Mexican event — but his night was only just beginning.

The 29-year-old showed he is a physical freak with three match victories in the space of six hours, adding the Los Cabos doubles title to his trophy room.

After defeating world No. 12 Casper Ruud 7-3 7-6 to claim the singles title, Thompson returned to the court moments later for the doubles semi-final with partner Max Purcell.

Thompson and Purcell defeated Ruud and William Blumberg in the semi-final before returning for the final where they defeated Gonzalo Escobar and Aleksandr Nedovyesov 7-6 6-2.

It was almost 3am local time when the Aussie pair reached match point — with Thompson’s night beginning with the singles final at 9pm.

His six hours of power have left tennis commentators stunned.

Former American tennis player and French Open doubles champ Ryan Harrison was reaching for the record book after seeing Thompson’s feat.

“Three matches and two titles in less than six hours. Has this ever been done before?”

Harrison went on to write on his Instagram stories while sharing a photo of Thompson holding up the Los Cabos trophy: “Hardest worker. Toughest competitor. Couldn’t be more proud of this guy”.

It has been an extraordinary week for Thompson, who also too out the Dallas Open doubles title with Purcell last week.

On his way to victory in Mexico, Thompson had to upset world No. 6 Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals and was on the brink of losing in the quarter-finals when down 6-0 4-1 before coming back to win in three sets 0-6 7-6 7-5.

It’s easy to see why Thompson is the talk of the tennis world today.

It’s been a long time coming for Thompson, who turned pro in 2013 and has been hovering in the world’s top 100 since 2016.

“It’s been an incredible week,” Thompson, said.

“I spent some serious hours on the court this week, and I want to thank everyone for staying up late last night and throughout the week. The crowd was amazing.

“It’s been a journey. I’m nearly 30 and I’m lifting a trophy; I never thought I would do that.”

He also couldn’t help himself but roast his vanquished rival.

“I just asked Casper if he could speak Spanish and he told me not very well … so I think he’s full of s**t,” Thompson said.

Ruud released a video with Rafael Nadal in 2022 where the Spaniard revealed he would return to tennis via an exhibition tournament through South America and the pair spoke in Nadal’s native tongue.

But it was Thompson who left the world in disbelief after almost bowing out in the quarters before coming back to go all the way.

The singles win earns Thompson over $A212,000 but will likely earn the Aussie a whole lot more as he’s set to take a seeding into the French Open.

With just 192 rankings points to defend between now and the start of the Roland Garros tournament, he could be well placed to earn plenty of points at the tournament, even if he can match his best ever run in France and make the third round.

He was absent last year and would gain points. He’ll also earn at least 69,000 euros ($A114,000) for just playing in the first round of the French Open — but it could be more as the 2024 prize money break down hasn’t been released yet.
