One of Tasmania’s fastest rising motocross stars has proven he is just as good under the bright lights of the supercross arena with a huge win at the 2023 Australian Supercross Championships.

Hobart’s Cooper Ford, a member of the KTM junior racing team, secured victory in the CR22 85 cup in the final round last Friday at Marvel Stadium.

The young gun finished the series on 68 points – eight ahead of his closest rival in Jack Nunn – with the win just another in what has become a stellar junior career so far.

A multiple time national motocross champion, the 14 year-old went into the final round leading but had to secure a win to be named champion.

“It was awesome to ride on Marvel Stadium,” Ford said.

“The track was really good, the fans and noise was unreal and there was just so much room in there.

“I went into the race first in the championship, three points ahead of second place, and I had to beat the closest competitor to win. The goal was to get off to a good start to hopefully do beat him.

“I was able to do that, made a few passes in the first rhythm, got myself a lead and then maintained my lead from there.

“Probably 10 meters down the straight I looked across and knew I was in front so that was a really good feeling. I looked to Dad and was able to celebrate. I can’t thank him and Mum enough for what they do for me.

“It was an awesome way to finish off the season and hopefully we can win some more (titles).”

Following what has been a busy year across both motocross and supercross, Ford will again spend plenty of time interstate next year – including heading to Western Australia for national titles – and is hopeful he can one day head overseas to take his talents global.

“I’d love to go to America if the opportunity opens up,” he said.

“To live over there when I’m older and race there would be a dream.”
