While he may be coming off a record-breaking domestic summer for Tasmania, star all-rounder Beau Webster says he hasn’t received any word from Australian selectors around a potential national debut.
Webster produced a remarkable Sheffield Shield season with both bat and ball for the Tigers with the 30 year-old becoming just the fifth player in history to score 800-plus runs and take 20 or more wickets in a single season.
His 914-runs and 26 wicket campaign also saw him named the competition’s player of the year while he was duly awarded the Ricky Ponting Medal as Tasmania’s best player.
But despite all those accolades aiding the Tigers charge towards a Shield final, Webster admits he hasn’t had any meaningful conversations around potential national selection.
“No correspondence directly, no,” Webster said.
“Like I’ve said the whole way along, I’m just going to try and do what I’ve done the last couple of years and put some good performances on the board.
“I think I’m playing the best cricket I ever have and have really nailed down a process now to go about it, whether I’m hitting the ball well or poorly.
“I’ll grab it at both ends if it comes, any sort of representative cricket for your country is massive and I’d be hugely proud to be able to make that jump, but at the same time you start thinking too far ahead it’s only going to have a detrimental effect on your game.
“So I’m focused on the first couple of games for Tassie and hopefully put some good enough performances on the board then I can get a look in at some potentially Aussie A games coming up this summer and we’ll go from there.”
Spending the off-season playing in England, Canada and the Cayman Islands, Webster said he had felt no external pressure to back up his record-breaking exploits with the Tigers season to kick off next week against Victoria.
