EXCITING quick Riley Meredith is in line to make his national debut on Australia’s resumption of international cricket in England.
The six match tour of the UK next month — compromising three ODIs and three T20s — will be the team’s first since COVID-19 shut down the back end of the 2019-20 season.
Meredith, considered one of the country’s most promising seamers, was picked in a preliminary 26-player squad in July and has made the final 21 in a massive boost to his future credentials.
The 24-year-old joins Tasmanian captain Matthew Wade in the squad, and is one of three uncapped emerging stars alongside Josh Philippe and Daniel Sams.
“We are very excited by these young players who we believe are all capable of playing a role in the Australian set-up in coming years,” national selector Trevor Hohns said.
Meredith has not featured on the domestic stage since suffering a serious side strain during the Big Bash in January.
He made his Australia A debut in a tour match against Pakistan last November and his selection for the series against England indicates he is firmly in calculations for the country’s World Cup plans in the coming years.
The Australian squad will depart from Perth next Sunday, August 23 and travel to Derby. They will play four practice matches, three T20s and one 50-over game, before meeting England in three Twenty20 Internationals and three One-Day Internationals at The Ageas Bowl in Southampton and Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester.
