Four Tasmanian sailors have once again proved we can match it with the world’s best after top 20 finishes at the recent International Cadet World Championships in Belgium.
Sandy Bay Yacht Club members Faye Read, Olive Hooper, Alex Ashbolt and Luca Groves all travelled to Europe in July to compete against the world’s best junior sailors.
Read and Hooper finished fourth in the Cadet Worlds Fleet category while Ashbolt and Groves teamed up to finish in 18th place out of 56 entries.
While it was a great result for the girls’, it wasn’t without its challenges after Hooper missed a day on the water through illness.
“We were really happy to finish fourth in what was a tough competition,” Read said.
“It was very different conditions to what we were used too but we managed to handle them quite well. The second day Olive actually got sick so I had to sail with someone else.
“That was a tough day but Olive and I managed to get some decent results in the last two days.
“It was great to get her back because Olive is an amazing crew and I love sailing with her.”
The results in Belgium capped off a highly successful two years for the quartet who all competed in the prior year’s event in Williamstown.
Read and Hooper finished the 2022 event in 12th place while Ashbolt and Groves finished in third.
While Groves has now finished sailing international cadets, Read, Hooper and Ashbolt will all get the chance to compete on home water later this year at the upcoming national championships.
The 62nd edition of the International Cadet National Championships will take place at the Sandy Bay Sailing Club from December 29 – January 4, 2024 with all three set to helm their own boats.
