Tasmanian Tigers captain Nivethan Radhakrishnan says he will lead a talent-packed up-and-coming group in their four-day Second XI match against ACT at Anzac Park from Monday.
Announced as state skipper for the second time on Sunday, Radhakrishnan hopes for better luck this time around leading the team.
“We played WA last season at the TCA ground and they beat us, so it will be a good chance to even the ledger and get a 50-50 record as captain,” Radhakrishnan said.
“We’ve got as very good side.
“It’s pretty young, we’ve got a couple of players who were picked on their early-season form [in the CTPL], and we’ve got some of our younger contracted players as well, who have been itching to get on the park to play some four-day cricket.
“It definitely is an honour to captain the team and hopefully I can lead the boys to a win.”
Radhakrishnan has played 15 games for Tasmania in Second XI cricket, as well as a Sheffield Shield match for the Tigers against NSW at the SCG in February, 2022.
“Second XI cricket is interesting because sometimes you’ve got state stalwarts who have played for a long time, for example D’Arcy Short starred for WA in that game against us,” he said.
“It’s surreal watching players like that, but at the same time you might have young guys who have played a couple of grade games selected on potential, and I love that mix for Second XI cricket.
“And we’ve got just that _ we’ve got a young squad but all of them have been performing well for at least that past two seasons of grade cricket or have been on the list for a while, like Nick Davis.
“He won our Second XI Player of the Year last season.
“He’s got multiple tons and he’s only 21 or 22 and he’s exciting and with a young squad we’re in a great spot.”
Radhakrishnan, who is starting his fourth season in Tasmania after moving from NSW, is unsure which bowler coach Andrew Gale will choose to open for the Tigers but expects to lead the way at the top of the order with the bat.
“I’ve been opening the batting in Second XI cricket for a while now so hopefully I can get in and get a big one,” he said.
