Tasmania football: Guilford Young v St Patrick’s College in Sports Association of Tasmanian Independent Schools grand final

The Independent School Aussie Rules premiership was decided in a big second half of footy, with one player’s five-goal haul sealing the win. WATCH THE COMEBACK ON THE REPLAY >>

BIG bustling Noah Holmes has kicked Gulford Young College to its first SATIS premiership since 2002.

The hulking Clarence full forward booted five goals all in the second half to propel GYC to a stirring comeback victory over St Patricks College at Kingston’s Twin Ovals, 9.9 (63) to 6.5 (41).

At 195cm and 100kg, Holmes was not only too big but too good for the St Patrick’s defenders, taking numerous contested marks deep in the forward line and kicking truly.

But at half time it appeared GYC’s drought would continue as the visitors led by 14 points.

With St Pat’s missing its own star forward Jackson Callow with an ankle injury, the team’s efficiency saw it take the lead through its efficient play in the forward 50.

However the second half was a complete change of game with St Pat’s held goalless and left as mere spectators to the Holmes show.

Fed by the likes of midfielders Darcy Gardner and Oli Davis, Holmes dined out on the delivery to kick his College to the SATIS premiership.

AFL talent scouts are interested in the game. Here are four stars to watch:

JACKSON CALLOW

(St Patricks College)

Tasmania has produced a long line of champion power forwards and this could be the next one. The power forward with a vice like grip, Callow has not just dominated at underage football, but senior football as well. The 18-year-old sits equal third in the TSL player of the year award for his outstanding performances with North Launceston this season. Aside from his strong aerial work, Callow also has a huge engine that can see him cover the ground like a midfielder.

SAM COLLINS

(Guilford Young College)

Collins will go toe to toe with his Devils teammate Jackson Callow in a dual to delight any purist. The grandson of David “Dickie” Collins – the famous North Hobart full forward forced to stuff the ball up his jumper after Wynyard fans tore the goalposts down to prevent him taking a kick after the siren to win the 1967 Tasmanian State Premiership – is a beautiful intercept mark with an attacking rebounding style ideal for modern football. He may lack the strength of Callow, but his smarts, courage and athleticism will make this matchup one not to be missed.

OLIVER SANDERS

(St Patricks College)

Sanders has become a regular for the all powerful North Launceston side this year with his lethal left foot, skill and creativity off half back. The son of former Devils coach and Launceston premiership coach Adam Sanders, Oliver will be part of St Pats midfield today and he will play a huge part as the visitors try and upset Guilford Young and keep the southern school’s premiership drought going.

SAM BANKS

(Guilford Young College)

At just 17, Banks might be too young for this year’s AFL draft, but he’s already got plenty of recruiting scouts following his every move. Has slotted into TSL senior football for Clarence as a half-back flanker or on the wing, but will be in the thick of the action in the midfield for today’s grand final. Has added a contested side to his game as he’s matured and can use the ball on either side of his body with aplomb. Along with skipper and Clarence teammate Oli Davis, Banks will be crucial to today’s outcome.
