New Tasmania Devils VFLW coach Georgia Walker is determined to help her players hit the ground running in season 2026.

The former AFLW player has been bestowed the honour of leading the Devils in their maiden campaign next year with the announcement made official on Monday.

Walker has coaching experience across several clubs including the last four years in the GWS Giants program working in roles including an assistant coach, head of development and head of academy.

Previously, she was at St Kilda after retiring due to injury.

At 26-years-old, she’s excited about her next chapter.

“It’s super exciting, I’ve known a couple of the players through the Academy pathway already which is really exciting to continue to build those relationships and it’s such a young list,” Walker said.

“I’m really passionate about being able to make it a very Tassie branded footy and having some local talent being able to be part of that list is really special too.

“I wouldn’t necessarily call it a stepping stone, I might fall in love with this team and not actually want to leave in a couple years time, hopefully no one else wants me to leave.

“But it would be a dream come true to be able to coach an AFLW team in a couple of years time.”

Walker has signed a one-year contract with the hope she can earn a further contract at the end of the Devils’ first season.

Walker said she has her eyes on a few former Giants players who have been delisted.

“The obvious one is Meghan Gaffney who got announced, the local talent and she’s a ripper human,” Walker said.

“So I’m in the process in the next couple of weeks to be able to catch up with our list manager and it’s all in the works as the W season comes and ends.

“Fingers crossed we get some of that local top end talent back.

“I actually haven’t (spoken to Meghan), this has all happened quite quickly, so I’m just focussing on trying to get here and let everyone else do their job and then I’ll slide in hopefully and twist her arm.”

Walker will be at the Devils’ VFLW side’s first training session next week before returning back to the mainland before joining the group in January.

Devils turn to former Pie as VFLW coach

A member of Collingwood’s inaugural AFLW team has been selected to lead the Tasmania Devils VFLW side in 2026.

The Devils have named Georgia Walker as the club’s first coach, confirming the news on Monday afternoon.

Walker has coaching experience across several clubs including the last four years in the GWS Giants program working in roles including an assistant coach, head of development and head of academy.

Previously, she was at St Kilda after retiring due to injury.

“To be moving to Tasmania to be a part of the VFLW program and the new Tasmania Football Club is very exciting,” Walker said.

“Over the last few years I have really focused in on my coaching and feel as though I am ready to take the next step, being a part of this program is a tremendous opportunity for me.”

“I have been watching on closely as the VFLW list has been built and announced. I have been impressed by the quality of athletes and the off-field team that are working on this program and I cannot wait to be a part of it. I will be relocating to Tasmania in the coming weeks and I am looking forward to kicking off training when I hit the ground.”

Devils head of football operations Aaron Pidgeon was pleased with the appointment.

“Georgia will be a great addition to our team, her experience and qualifications coupled with her enthusiasm to be a part of the Devils journey is really exciting for our club,” he said.
