The most popular driver in supercars will go on maximum attack when the V8s hit Tasmania for round three of the championship in three weeks with Chaz Mostert pumped with confidence after winning in New Zealand.
The two-time Bathurst winner’s best performance in Tasmania was a win in 2021 when he took race two on the Sunday _ his first win in a Holden, first win for Walkinshaw Racing, and first win at Symmons Plains.
After a stellar weekend in New Zealand, Mostert closed the gap on championship leader Will Brown heading to Symmons for the May 9-11 event.
Having entered New Zealand 134 points behind Brown in the championship standings, a strong weekend saw the WAU driver close considerably on Brown, now 86 points behind.
Making Mostert’s win extra special was the support of daughter Everly and wife Riarne and her family, who hail from New Zealand.
“I had a cracking weekend in Taupō,” Mostert said.
“I managed to get a race win on Saturday and a podium on Sunday, and felt like I was at a second home round with Ri’s family being Kiwi.
“So it was awesome to have success in front of the extended family.”
The race for the championship is super-tight at the top end.
Red Bull racer Brown heads to Tassie leading the championship on 651 points, followed by Cam Waters (Tickford Mustang) 617, Matt Payne (Penrite Racing Mustang) 605, Broc Feeney (Red Bull Camaro) 590 and Mostert (Walkinshaw Mustang) 565.
Mostert was forced to qualify on used rubber for the Sunday race and despite qualifying ninth, carved his way through the field for third.
“In the race, we ran a longer first stint and benefited from the clean air, I made my way into the top five at the halfway mark and with 10 laps to go I snagged the last spot on the podium from Brodie {Kostecki],” he said.
“I definitely didn’t think I’d be standing on the podium after starting ninth.
“The crew executed perfectly alongside the right strategy was the right potion.”
