A talented rugby league teen playing junior football for the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles has starred as the Waratahs went on a try-scoring blitz in their Super Rugby U16s big bash with the Melbourne Rebels.

Knox Grammar student Reilly Caswell scored three tries in the first half and came close to a fourth in the second as the Waratahs rolled over the Rebels in round two of the series played in Melbourne on Saturday.

The NSW Waratahs cracked the half ton for the second time in two weeks with their 51-9 victory over the Rebels on the road.

The big win followed on from their 50-5 demolition of the Brumbies in round one.

It has also taken the young Tahs a step close to their goal of navigating the Super Rugby U16s series season undefeated.

“That’s been our goal from the start of the season, something we really want to do,’’ said captain Edward Baxter from Randwick, a Year 11 student at Shore.

“We have some awesome backs, lots of speed, power and flair. It’s up to us to deliver them the ball.’’

The Rebels kept the Waratah on their toes early in their second round but the defending championships were a cut above their rivals - as was Caswell.

The youngster, who also played Harold Matthews for the Manly Sea Eagles this season, went over on the right edge twice within the space of a few minutes to put early distance between the Waratahs and Rebels before scoring a third try later in the first half.

His efforts and those of three others teammates had the Waratahs up 32-9 at halftime.

Other first half standouts were young marshall Angus Grover who scored the fifth try, Onitoni Large who went over for the fourth and Charlie Ghattas who opened the scoring for the Waratahs.

All of the Rebels points came from Max Tokava penalty goals.

Hunter Sports high student Jai Callaghan weaved his way to his first try of the series in his debut game before converting to put the Tahs up 39-9 after taking over the kicking duties from Jonty Fowler late in the first half.

Newington’s Callum Grantham then scored his second try of the series to put the Tahs up 44-9 before Matthew Gough scored the Tahs ninth try.

“We are pretty happy. We were very accurate and that led to some sensational tries,’’ said Waratahs head of talent ID Andrew Cleverly.

“I was very impressed with some of the tries, driving lineout, the boys temperament to keep playing at pace, and their defence with not having a try scored against the.’’

The Waratahs play their first Super Rugby under 16s and 19s home match of the season next Sunday at Forshaw Park.

The Waratahs under 15s side will also play on October 15 the same day against the Queensland Reds.
