Son of a Tasmanian football gun and star recruit power the Port to victory against Lindisfarne

Former Lauderdale star Thor Boscott was the headline recruit for Cygnet entering the SFL season but the club kept another boom addition under wraps — until today.

EIGHT goals from the son of a gun and a dazzling debut from its star recruit has lifted Cygnet to a stunning victory against the two-time reigning SFL premiers.

Lindisfarne has sunk to 0-2 to start the shortened 2020 season after Josh Fox — son of AFL Tasmania Hall of Fame member Wayne — ripped apart the Two Blues defence at Anzac Park, while Thor Boscott also shone.

Trailing by 15 points at the last change after conceding 7.5 to 2.4 in the third quarter, and down a rotation with playing coach Ben Cato (hamstring) on the sidelines, the Port stormed home to record a 15.13 (103) to 13.14 (92) win.

Fox, who after three years in Melbourne lobbed at Cygnet to join his sister who also plays at the club, was the hero in kicking the go ahead major entering time on in the last stanza before the visitors iced the seesawing contest.

The tall forward had earlier kicked four consecutive goals in the second quarter to help his side open up a 16-point buffer at halftime, only for the hosts to rally after the break to grab the ascendancy.

Twice the Two Blues moved 22 points clear but a goal to Fox in the last minute before three-quarter time cut the deficit and then the visitors came rushing home.

Boscott, playing his first match since joining the club as an assistant coach from Lauderdale, kicked a pair of goals either side of quarter time and was a wrecking ball in the middle.

“We probably let ourselves down in the third quarter, but we regrouped in the last and put the pressure on them and got over the line,” Cato said.

“You can see his [Fox’s] class. His sister plays in the women’s side, he worked in Melbourne and I don’t think he played last year because he had a knee reconstruction but we got on to him.

“He is back home for a while because he is working from home, we were lucky enough to snag him.

“I knew he played at Clarence before he left but I hadn’t seen him play a lot, but you can see the natural forward he is, good hands and a good kick.”

In other matches Brighton came crashing back to earth from its opening round victory, crushed by Huonville by 89 points, Hobart overran Claremont in the last quarter while Dodges escaped with a narrow win against a wasteful Sorell 10.7 (67) to 6.20 (56).
