FORMER Hobart Chargers president Simon Brookhouse will be returning to the state after landing the biggest new job in Tasmanian sport – the inaugural NBL chief executive officer.

As revealed by the Mercury on Monday, Brookhouse – currently Golf Australia’s general manager golf operations – will be tasked with building the NBL’s 10th team from the ground up.

“I’m very excited about the opportunity to be part of Tasmania’s new NBL team,’ Brookhouse said.

“Tasmania has a rich sporting heritage, and this is an opportunity to showcase the state on the

national and international stage.”

Before being a leading golf administrator, Brookhouse had a strong connection with basketball as SEABL chairman, Knox basketball association chief executive and before that Chargers president (1999-2002) that saw the club win SEABL southern conference titles and a national title.

“Having been closely involved in basketball in Tasmania, I know how passionate Tasmanians are about their sport and state and we want everyone to get behind the new team and make basketball the number one sport in Tasmania,” he said.

He will start in the position next month.

“There’s a lot to be done between now and the team’s first game later next year including naming the new team, recruiting staff and players and completing work on the redevelopment of the Derwent Entertainment Centre,” Brookhouse said.

“I look forward to working with the local community to build a team for all of Tasmania and a team all Tasmanians can be proud of.”

NBL owner and executive chairman Larry Kestelman said Brookhouse was an impressive candidate for the big job of starting the club from scratch.

“Simon brings outstanding credentials to this important position as we prepare to launch Tasmania’s new NBL team in 2021-22,” Kestelman said.

“He has strong experience across sport and business but also understands the importance of working with government and local communities.

“He has lived and worked in Tasmania and is a proven leader who will help bring the community together for this exciting journey ahead.”
