A Southern Football League women’s match has been called off after a horrific leg injury to a star forward.
Sorell’s Bella Cree was tackled in the forward pocket in the third quarter during the game against St Virgil’s with her knee collapsing under her.
Screams were heard from across the field as Eagles players ran over to see what had happened with the umpire immediately blowing her whistle to stop play.
As Cree laid in pain clutching her knee, the stretcher was called only to be sent back as an ambulance was required.
Cree was concussed during the round 4 match against Dodges Ferry on May 3 and returned for her first game back in the match agianst St Virgils.
The game was called off with seven minutes to go in the third quarter with the Eagles taking a 19-point victory as they were leading 5.8 (38) to 3.1 (19) at the time of the incident.
Sorell coach Scot Murray said it was a heartbreaking result for Bella with the game on Saturday her first back since a concussion.
“Emotional. It’s not something you ever want to see,” Murray said.
“Poor Bella has only just come back from a concussion protocol, so three weeks out. Bit hard on herself for being out that long and now she has done that.
“She’s just full of apologies coming off the ground feeling she has let everyone down, which she didn’t. She is a wonderful kid and she will bounce back.
“I adore these girls and I don’t even like seeing them get a knock to the knee or shoulder or anything like that let alone something that’s that painful.
“I’ll be touching base with her and keeping in contact with her.
“The four points mean nothing really, our thoughts are with our injured player and what today is and means.”
The ambulance took around 20 minutes to arrive at Pembroke Park. Cree was taken to hospital after being treated by paramedics.
Sorell is hosting its annual Pink Sock Day with it also shaping as the Carolyn Birch Memorial Round.
