SFL have claimed ultimate bragging rights in a big win against NWFL

SFL’s goalkicking duo Grace White and Bryce Alomes have led an empowered victory in both the women’s and men’s clashes in the Tasmanian Representative Series against an arch rival.

'Accidents happen on the footy field'

A six-goal brilliance from power forward Bryuce Alomes has helped SFL come from behind to claim a 19-point victory over rivals NWFL at Dial Park.

It was a second quarter resurgence which saw SFL storm back before eventually kicking 4.5 in the final term to run out 12.12 (84) to 10.5 (65).

NWFL’s Jack Templeton ran riot in the opening quarter as the North-West kicked seven goals in the opening quarter with Templeton booting three as they took an 18-point lead into the first break.

But it was a four goal second quarter by SFL which saw the Southerners peg the score back to draw level at the main break as both sides showed no side of giving an inch.

It was a tough third quarter for both sides with only one goal kicked coming at the 16th minute mark as NWFL held just a two-point lead at the final break.

But it was all SFL in the final term as the run and carry through the midfield looked to be the difference as they kicked three of the last four goals of the game.

SFL DOUBLE

It is a long way up to Burnie but the SFL sides in both men and women will enjoy the four hour trip back as they both come away as winners.

It didn’t look like it was going to be the men’s day as the NWFL kicked away early in the first but some smart coaching saw SFL claw their way back to take a 19-point victory.

TALE OF TWO HALVES

In the first half, there were 16.4 kicked as both teams went into the main break locked at 8.2 but it was a completely different story in the second half.

NWFL kicked just 2.3 after half time while SFL booted 4.10, keeping the North-West in with a chance in what was a cold and wet day in Tasmania.

TEMPLETON-ALOMES SHOOTOUT

The big forwards were on full display in the opening half when things were easy going for both clubs with SFL’s Bryce Alomes and NWFL’s Jack Templeton showing no issues with the wet weather footy.

Templeton booted three goals in the first quarter as the Alomes returned fire keeping SFL in the game in the first quarter and led the resurgence in the second quarter and the final.

Women’s

SFL have claimed the bragging rights in the matchup against NWFL with a 32-point win at Dial Park on Saturday afternoon.

Led by a brilliant three-goal performance from Grace White, SFL did the damage early, keeping NWFL to just one goal in the first half to run out eventual winners 9.11 (65) to 5.3 (33).

White booted two goals in the first quarter including the opening goal of the game as the run and carry through the midfield was what set the two sides apart.

Big named NWFL player Sarah Skinner was kept quiet in the opening term but then rose to the occasion after the half time break as NWFL closed the gap.

Sarah Skinner and Grace White were awarded the best on grounds for both sides.

It now sets up a very important match up on Saturday June 21 for SFL when they host NTFA at North Hobart.

Both SFL and NWFL have a win on the board and it will come down to percentage if NTFA can provide an upset win in a fortnight’s time.

WHITE’S DOMINANT DISPLAY

The State Academy player has shown in 2025 just how powerful she is in front of goal and Saturday was no different for White as she booted a game high three goals.

But it was the first quarter where she kicked two of them which helped set up a big win for the travelling side.

SFL had nine shots at goal in the opening quarter, White kicking two and missing a couple herself but the vice-captain linked well with her fellow forwards and mids.

CLASS ALWAYS RESPONDS

Much could have been said about the slow start the NWFL had especially from gun players Sarah Skinner and Emilie Saward as their side managed just one goal to half time.

But it was a third quarter blitz which was led by Skinner, which saw NWFL close the gap and look threatening in the second half.

Skinner and Saward booted goals in third term but were part of the third plus showed class above.

NO TRIP TOO FAR

The drive from Hobart to Burnie is a long one, so would it be to travel to Hobart from Burnie and it would make it an even longer trip if you come back without the win.

It won’t be the case for SFL who were too strong for NWFL putting the game out of reach with a dominant five goal first half.

As much as the damage was done on the scoreboard, it was the run and carry from midfield guns Brieanna Barwick, Angelica Clark, White (when she wasn’t forward) as well as a strong defensive day out for Rachel Archer who was able to help rebound their side off of half back.

The SFL players will enjoy the four hour bus trip back to Hobart.
