Queensland flyhalf Tom Lynagh’s says his “priority” this year is shining for the Reds in the Super Rugby Pacific season rather than playing for the Wallabies against the British and Irish Lions.
Lynagh, 21, debuted for the Wallabies last year but was overlooked for Australia’s spring tour of the UK and Ireland.
“(It) was a dream year,” the son of Wallabies legend Michael Lynagh said on Tuesday at Ballymore after returning to training following a recent tonsillectomy.
“(I was) really happy with what I managed to accomplish but (there is) plenty more still to go … starting with this Super Rugby season.”
Lynagh said while “everyone in Australia that plays rugby” had an eye on the Lions’ three-Test tour, which starts in July, he had more pressing matters at hand.
“I want to take care of Super (Rugby Pacific) first – that’s my priority this year,” he said.
“If I look after that, the rest will follow.”
Lynagh will this week head to Sydney for a three-day Wallabies training camp, and admits he has areas of his game he needs to improve.
“Kicking has been a big part of my game and (Wallabies staff) still want me to work on that in kinds of areas in terms of kicking, whether it’s attacking kicking, clearing kicks or goalkicking especially – that was one of my poor parts in the (2024) Super Rugby season.
“I didn’t goal-kick as well as I would have liked to, so that’s always a continuous work-on for me,” he said.
“Playing at the line and picking right decisions is a big work-on, and something I have been working on. and I feel a lot more confident and comfortable doing that.
“It’s good to get back into the swing of things and get the legs working.”
After the Wallabies camp, Lynagh will return to the Reds ahead of their tour to the UK and Ireland for games against to two-match series against Bristol (January 31) and Ulster (February 7).
“The boys will take a lot from it and learn a lot from it,” he said.
