Rowing’s rising stars to watch as they chase Australian selection at Pathway selection trials

Australia’s rowers were some of the stars of the show at the Tokyo Olympics. Now a new generation are being put through their paces at Australian trials. NSW young guns to watch.

In a golden hour in Tokyo last year Australian rowers were the stars of the show in sport.

Now, as senior rowers train on for the international season ahead, the young guns of the sport will be put through their paces at the major selection regatta in Canberra.

Jaime Fernandez, Deputy Performance Director at Rowing Australia, and others will be closely monitoring the performance of our next generation of rowers at the underage selection trials in Canberra from Sunday.

Fernandez said 24 athletes and two coxswains from NSW will be competing for spots in Under 21 and Under 23 teams with 383 athletes in total competing at the event, including the Interstate School Pathway Eights.

The U21 team selected will compete in a trans-Tasman series against New Zealand at Penrith in June in a multi-boat format.

U19 and U23 athletes will compete at a combined world championships in Varese, Italy in July.

Fernandez, a three-time Olympian and silver medallist in the men’s eight at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, has also identified some of the top talent from NSW to watch at the event – and into the future.

Laura Gourley, UTS Rowing Club: A NSW state rep and with NSWIS. Is the No. 1 under 23 sculler and rated highly after strong performance at the NSW and Australian championships.

Caitlin McManus-Barrett and Izzy Scammell: Sydney Rowing Club: This pair have been travelling between NSW and the ACT to make their partnership work. A young and strong combination chasing sweep team selection.

Harry Crouch, Sydney Rowing Club: A national team member who has made teams in the past and chasing more success in the sculling squad.

Hamish Danks, Sydney University Boat Club: A young rower on the rise who was in the junior men’s double last year. Looking to compete in U21s this year.

Marcus Della Marta, UTS Rowing Club: A NSWIS scholarship holder bidding for U23 team. A previous member of the U21 and U23 teams.

Harry Curtin UTS Rowing Club: In lightweight men’s sculling group for U23s. Also eligible for U21 team so has two opportunities to make a team

Laura and Grace Sypher, Sydney Rowing Club: Both are eligible for U21 selection in lightweight sculling but Grace chasing it in U23s.

Nicola Greenland, Sydney University: Chasing sculling selection. Hails from ACT but lives in NSW and in underage team last year.

Ella Mentzines, Sydney University Boat Club: A former representative for Australian on an underage team. Won a silver meal at the junior world championships in 2018.

Emily Sheppard Sydney University Boat Club: Chasing selection in the under 23 team as a sculling athlete.

Madeline Vagg Sydney University Boat club: From the ACT but lives in Sydney and made the junior team last year..

Grace Turner, Sydney Uni Boat Club: Chasing her first selection in the U21s.

Max Crowe, Sydney Rowing: Originally from Queensland and chasing sculling selection as an U23 athlete.

Alex Wood, UTS Rowing Club: Also in race for U23 sculling selection.

Patrick Burke, Mosman Rowing Club, and Miles Harold, Nepean Rowing Club: Both rowers are chasing U21 sculling selection.

Kieran Riach, Henry Ryan and Ryan Gibson (Sydney Uni), Torben Ungemach and Nikolas Pender (Mosman), Declan Glendinning and Bradley Graham (Sydney Rowing Club) are all competing for men’s sweep selection.

Hannah Cowap, Sydney Rowing Club, and Nicolas Rogers, UTS Rowing Club, are vying for selection as coxswains.

Coxswains are eligible for selection across gender categories.
