The galloper last seen finishing fourth behind Sir Dragonet in the Cox Plate is one of the latest nominations for the $5 million All-Star Mile in March.
Irish-bred Mugatoo, trained by Kris Lees, will be striving to become the first overseas-bred horse to win the rich contest.
Mugatoo ran a mighty race in the Cox Plate when sent out $26 and running fourth and if he makes it to the All-Star Mile, it will be back to the same track at Moonee Valley.
A start before the Cox Plate, Mugatoo put the writing on the wall that he could be a force to be reckoned with when finishing a narrow runner-up behind Mirage Dancer in the Group 1 The Metropolitan at Randwick.
The son of Henrythenavigator, who has scored eight wins and just short of $1 million in prizemoney from 16 starts, is owned by the Australian Bloodstock syndicate, whose most famous success came with Protectionist in the 2014 Melbourne Cup.
“Australian Bloodstock were very active on social media in promoting their nominees for The All-Star Mile 2020, so we look forward to seeing what the team there have up their sleeves for Mugatoo when voting opens on 22 January,” said Greg Carpenter, Racing Victoria’s Executive General Manager – Racing.
“Mugatoo has three wins, a close second in the Metropolitan and a fourth in the Cox Plate from his last five runs, so he is clearly a very talented horse and would be a worthy inclusion in the field for the world’s richest mile race.
“It is pleasing to see trainers from NSW and across the country targeting Australia’s only fan-voted race, and it will be intriguing to see which other ‘All-Stars’ are entered before nominations close on 11 January.”
Mugatoo joins an star-studded list of nominees for The All-Star Mile 2021, which includes David Payne’s multiple Group 1 winning filly Montefilia.
