Punching through barriers: Mt Druitt’s Tyrell Adams serving as an inspiration in and out of the ring

He’s a budding talent in the boxing ranks who has built a 4-0 pro record inside four months. But it’s Tyrell Adams’ community work and role model attitude that makes him an Indigenous star on the rise.

Tyrell Adams has the boxing world at his feet.

The 19-year-old from Mt Druitt in Sydney’s west recently stepped up to the professional level and hasn’t looked back.

In the space of four months he has amassed a 4-0 record, including appearing on the prelims of a No Limit card.

“I made my pro debut in March on a Wanderers Promotion card against someone who fought the likes of Sam Goodman,” he said.

“Then I went to Thailand and trained with Tyler Blizzard and won a fight over there.

“In May I was on the undercard of the Sam Goodman and Harry Garside card. That was unreal.

“I remember watching those cards on TV and thinking to myself that I can’t wait to fight on one of them. The atmosphere was crazy.

“Last month I stopped Joe Kara in the fourth round.

“I’m back in September to fight for the WBC Silver Title and that will be my last hitout for the year.

“Hopefully I can win that and look at a couple of other belts. I’d love to try and work my up for a shot at an Australian title.”

Adams’ pride in his culture is on full display every time he hops in the ring, with ‘Kamilaroi’ inked across his chest.

It’s a nod to his father’s background from the small town of Pilliga, west of Narrabri.

“That’s our tribe,” he said.

“I’ve grown up all my life in Mt Druitt, so when I go out there I proudly represent both.”

Outside of boxing, Adams works as an SLSO at Lethrdige Park Public School, inspiring young kids.

“It’s amazing, I’m loving it,” he said.

“It’s a job that works well with my boxing. I’ve got the time to train before and after.

“Some of the students have come to my fights. One of the little fellas did the walkout with me at my debut.

“Growing up in Mt Druitt I didn’t have anyone to look up to. If I can be that for them, it’s incredible.”

He’s not the only Adams making an impact in the combat world, with younger brother Tyson also taking big strides.

The Chifley College student is a two-time Golden Gloves winner and a regular representative with NSW.

Tyrell praised the 15-year-old and the impact he is having.

“He’s doing good things,” he said.

“Tyson is still at the age where he’s in the amateurs, but he’s very active and racking up the fights.

“I’m very proud of him. I hope he keeps trotting along and it’s great that he’s following in my footsteps.

“Hopefully we can be at the world level together.”
