THE transformation of the Derwent Entertainment Centre from a dated, non compliant venue to world class arena is officially underway.
The State Government has completed its $8 million purchase of the building from the Glenorchy City Council, with premier Peter Gutwein helping kickstart the $41 million upgrade in what will become the “nest” for Tasmania’s NBL side the JackJumpers.
Timelines will be tight — the official fixture is yet to be released but the start of the 2021-22 NBL season is slated for next October — but Mr Gutwein is unwavering in his confidence of league owner Larry Kestelman pulling off what is two year’s worth of refurbishment inside one.
The DEC upgrade is stage one of Glenorchy’s $200 million Wilkinsons Point precinct development, which will eventually house retail, hotel and restaurant outlets.
“I couldn’t express how happy I am this is taking place, this has been a long journey, it began back in 2019 but today we take the first significant step as the demolition begins within the DEC as we turn it into the nest,” Mr Gutwein said.
“As I have said before, Larry Kestelman is a force of nature, it is my view he will move heaven and earth to ensure this stadium is ready for the first games next year.
“I don’t think the schedule for next season has been announced but obviously that is a matter for Larry.
“Mr Kestelman is a man who gets things done, it has been a pleasure to work with him through this process to date.”
The Government is also investing a further $20 million for a four-court, multisport facility on the same site, with tenders out.
A state of the art DEC already has its first booking, with Guy Sebastian locked in to perform on November 22 next year.
“With this upgrade, the DEC will be transformed into a world class entertainment and events venue,” Mr Kestelman said.
“We look forward to welcoming concerts, conventions and other major sporting events including the Tasmania JackJumpers to the DEC and thank the Tasmanian Government and Glenorchy City Council for their support for this project which will boost jobs, tourism and economic activity for the state.”
