Port outlasts Lindisfarne in grinding encounter to continue building into 2021 SFL season

His players had to dig deep and grind away against a gallant Lindisfarne, but Cygnet coach Thor Boscott continues to be impressed from the buy-in from his group.

CYGNET continues to build momentum into the SFL season after outlasting Lindisfarne in a grinding round four encounter in front its home fans.

After blowing an eight-goal quarter time lead in the opening round against Hobart, the Port has strung together three consecutive victories — including reversing last year’s grand final result against premiers Huonville Lions.

On Saturday they overcame a dogged Lindisfarne, pulling away after halftime to record an 11.7 (73) to 7.8 (50) win.

Playing coach Thor Boscott booted three goals, while Sam Dean and Jordan Lane did the bulk of the damage in an even performance that left Boscott pleased at the buy-in from the group.

“We identified where we went wrong against the Tigers in round one but the boys are really showing some good confidence and ability to implement our game plan and do it for four quarters,” Boscott said.

“That’s what football is about and how we have been doing it has been good.

“Lindisfarne are a quality side, and I honestly think our back half were very composed with the football today.

“We did a great job putting the pressure on their mids to kick it longer and higher and give our backs a reasonable chance to win the football.

“I couldn’t pick a best on, it was just a good team performance, same as last week.”

Joining Cygnet with a 3-1 record were Huonville Lions, who heaped more misery on Claremont after kicking a cricket score against the hapless Pies.

Fifteen of the 22 Lions players hit the scoreboard — four players booted four majors each — in the 34.36 (240) to 0.3 (3) demolition.

What was shaping up as a tough campaign for new Claremont coach Paul Allison has become a horror reality, with his side managing just 39 points over the first four rounds while conceding 891 – for a percentage of just 4.38.

In the remaining matches, New Norfolk was too strong for Sorell running out 15.18 (108) to 7.4 (46) victors, while Dodges Ferry defeated Brighton by 49 points to keep the Robins winless.
