We had photographer John Appleyard on the ground catching the actions as the best young talent in rugby hit the field for a series of crucial trial matches.

CHS 1 v CAS 1

There was plenty on the line in this match, one of the highlights of the day.

Players were keen to impress the selectors at the ground closely watching the performances of the rugby young guns for numerous squads being named over the weekend and onwards.

After a scoreless but gritty first half, Semi Ropati broke the deadlock, scoring off an intercept for CHS early in the second.

CAS then retaliated with four tries to claim the match.

Scorers for CAS were Bryn Edwards from Barker College, Charlie Poynton from Barker, Archie Saunders from Knox Grammar School and Doug Philipson from Barker.

“Quite a lot of our guys will be earning positions in Gen Blue’s or schools teams,” said coach Dean Hargreaves, who will lead the Gen Blues U18 squad.

“Philipson did a great job and our No. 8 Lachlan Hooper was also excellent. He carried really well.”

NSWCC v SYDNEY JUNIORS

Sydney produced a memorable performance in their outing against NSWCC, taking the match 38-12.

Sydney stamped their authority on the match early, taking a 19-5 lead into the halftime break.

“It was a good game, good to get the win,’’ said Sydney’s Omar Noureddine from Eastwood rugby.

NSW COUNTRY V AICES

NSW Country dominated this match-up after leading 17-0 at halftime.

AICES put one try on in the second half as the Country players stormed home to their 34-7 victory.

CAS II v CHS II

CAS coach Shaun Foley was delighted to see his charges come back from their loss in trial matches at Shore playing fields on Tuesday to take match against CHS II 51-7.

Together for the first time last Sunday, CAS showed the benefit of a few extra days together with their nine try blowout.

Foley is hoping some of his charges have impressed enough to make the NSW schools team to play at the upcoming Australian championships in Sydney.

“We are hoping a couple get picked up,” he said.

“Manus (Bailey) our No. 10, has been a standout.

“He’s really impressive with his patience and skill set.”

Will Perkins from St Ignatius College was the leading try scorer across all games on Friday.

His four tries helped GPS 1 to their 53-26 victory over ISA 1 at Eroc Tweedale Stadium.
