Annabelle Smith and Maddison Keeney miss medals after final dive goes horribly wrong

With a medal there for the taking, Annabelle Smith and Maddison Keeney unfortunately couldn’t convert on their final dive.

'Titmus supersedes Ian Thorpe as our greatest ever swimmer'

What a disaster for Australia’s diving duo Anabelle Smith and Maddison Keeney.

They have produced a shocking final dive to botch their hopes of a medal with silver and bronze in sight in the final of three-metre springboard synchronised event.

Smith and Keeney won bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics and they just needed a solid final dive to clinch at least bronze, with silver also a possibility.

But the pair’s final dive, a forward two-and-a-half somersault with a twist, was one of the worst of the entire event as the pair hit the water well out of sync.

A shattered Smith and Keeney finished fifth, with Chinese sensations Yani Chang and Yiwen Chen claiming gold in a canter with 337.68 points.

Smith and Keeney finished with 292.20 points, adrift of British pair Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen, who took bronze with 302.28 points.

The pair were on the verge of silver after four dives, but they will rue a woeful fifth dive which has cost them a medal.
