Ezra Mam is due to check out of rehab next week and his off-field drama could cost the Broncos young gun in excess of $500,000.
This masthead can reveal the hefty bill Mam may be facing which could take a large chunk out of his five-year, $4 million Broncos contract.
Queensland Police are continuing their probe of Mam’s car crash with an Uber driver last month in which he allegedly failed a roadside drug test and was found to be driving unlicensed.
Police have not laid any charges and it’s understood they are waiting for Mam to emerge from rehab before finalising their investigation - and the b-sample from his positive roadside drugs test.
Even if Mam is not deregistered by the NRL, which remains an option, the five-eighth faces a major financial blow.
His stint in rehab cost an estimated $100,000, while Mam, as an unlicensed driver, may have to foot the repair bill for the two vehicles damaged in the accident.
Factoring in potential fines from the Broncos and NRL integrity unit, Mam’s final bill could balloon beyond half-a-million dollars.
Broncos coach Michael Maguire has been in regular contact with Mam, who has his phone in rehab, and says he remains unsure what penalties the 21-year-old will face from the NRL.
Well-placed sources say Mam could be rubbed out for two to three months by the NRL, prompting the Broncos to investigate bringing Ben Hunt back to Brisbane.
“I couldn’t tell you the time, I wouldn’t have a clue,” Maguire said of the NRL’s proposed sanctions.
“That’s a work in progress.
“Ezra is working on himself at the moment and that is an important part, he has acknowledged where he is at so he is owning it himself.
“It (an NRL punishment) is out of my control.”
While Mam is due to complete his rehabilitation in the coming weeks, it is unclear when he will report for pre-season training at the Broncos.
Maguire indicated the Broncos are prepared to give Mam a second chance.
“I have heard from him and stayed in contact. He is working on himself,” he said.
“I met Ezra about four years ago and he is a good man, a young man.
“He is going through a bit at the moment and he needs to sort himself out and work his way through it. I’ve said if you own it, then you can deal with it moving forward so it’s something I know he is doing.”
