Canterbury Bulldogs halfback Toby Sexton will quit the club at the end of the NRL season to play in the UK Super League in the wake of Lachlan Galvin signing at Belmore.
The 24-year-old is expected to announce after Friday night’s Round 18 match against the Brisbane Broncos that he is off to the UK Super League to play for French club the Catalans Dragons.
He has agreed to a two-year contract with the club worth around $500,000 a season.
Former NRL halves Mitchell Pearce and James Maloney have previously played for the club.
Despite an outstanding year for the Bulldogs, Sexton has been forced out by the club’s decision to sign Galvin from the Wests Tigers on a big-money deal until the end of 2028.
There is also speculation hooker Reed Mahoney, who is under contract until the end of 2026, will be released by the Bulldogs.
Sexton had another option to join a Sydney-based NRL club but opted for the experience of playing football in France.
Canterbury boss Phil Gould Gould was pressed on Monday about whether Sexton was still wanted at the Bulldogs.
“Toby’s doing a great job,” Gould told Channel 9’s 100% Footy.
“As I said, we’ll get through this season, then we’ll see where Toby, what his options are, and what he wants to do.
“We have not dismissed, in any way, shape or form. It’s never been discussed. We haven’t dismissed the fact Toby Sexton will be with us next year.
“We haven’t dismissed that at all. What we’re going to do is just let him get through this season.”
Galvin has played three games for the Bulldogs since his mid-season switch from the Tigers.
On two occasions, he has come off the interchange bench for Mahoney, with regular halfback Sexton forced into the hooker role.
In his lone start in Round 15, Galvin played five-eighth in Canterbury’s 24-18 victory over South Sydney without regular No.6 Matt Burton, who was 18th man for NSW in State of Origin II.
Galvin raised caused a stir this week when he took to social media to applaud close mate Tallyn Da Silva’s Wests Tigers defection, only a month after his own messy and highly-publicised Concord exit.
The 19-year-old took to social media on Monday night to congratulate Da Silva on his decision to depart the Tigers to join Parramatta on the eve of the June 30 mid-season transfer deadline.
Galvin re-posted Parramatta’s announcement of Da Silva’s signing with a ‘perfect’ hand emoji alongside a cheeky wink.
