MELBOURNE have beaten the Raiders 20-14 in controversial circumstances at GIO Stadium but their win has been soured by news of an injury to captain Cameron Smith.

Smith only lasted four minutes into the second half before leaving the field with a pectoral injury.

It was the first time since 2009 he had featured in less than 50 minutes of a match for Melbourne.

The Storm skipper revealed post-match he could be facing between 4-6 weeks on the sidelines.

“The decision was to come off because there’s still a long way to go in the season,” Smith said.

“It wasn’t worth the risk, to be honest.”

Fullback Billy Slater also left the field on a medicab after a late hit from Canberra’s Sia Soliola knocked him out cold.

Remarkably, the Raiders forward escaped being sent off and was allowed to stay on after being put on report.

You can vote and then tell us what you think about the referees decision to not send off Soliola here.
