AARON Gray could emerge the big winner at South Sydney after the club missed the chance to replace centre Dylan Walker with James Roberts.

The Bunnies may have some superstar power in Sam Burgess and Greg Inglis, two of the biggest names in rugby league, but their outside backs are suddenly looking light on after Walker’s exit.

It might explain why Souths chased former junior Roberts, l who eventually linked with Brisbane two days before Christmas.

Coach Michael Maguire told The Saturday Telegraph every club would always look at good players on the market, but even without Roberts the competition for the two centre spots was healthy, including Gray.

Gray was involved in the September prescription drugs scare with Walker, yet could find himself wearing his good mate’s jumper should he continue to impress Maguire.

Alex Johnston, the man widely regarded to eventually succeed Inglis in the Bunnies’ No. 1 jumper, has also spent time during the pre-season in the centres, and could be called on if required, said Maguire.

Inglis plays centre for Queensland when Billy Slater is fit, but there is zero interest about shifting him from fullback — from Inglis and Maguire.

“Aaron Gray is one player I’m looking forward to seeing develop,’’ Maguire said.

“He came on to the (NRL) scene on the wing, but he played his whole career in the centres.

“He’s fit and healthy at the moment and he’s been training really well for us.

“I’ve got some great options with Kirisome Auva’a, Bryson Goodwin, Aaron and Alex.

“Alex is a possibility, and you always need cover in your squad.

“I’ve got some good wingers coming through, Michael Oldfield has trained very well since he’s come in, and Hymel Hunt has joined the squad as well, so that allows Alex to move into the centres if I need him. He’s got speed and skill, and that’s what you look for in those (centres).’’

Gray underwent surgery in the off-season, and then had to endure the emotions of being rushed to hospital with Walker after their accidental overdose.

While Gray, 21, would have been shattered to see Walker depart, he clearly hasn’t let the situation distract him from the job at hand.

Souths made a decent play for Roberts, the speedster who grew up in South Sydney heartland, but was moved on for disciplinary reasons.

Having matured and got his life on track, Roberts was seen as a possible poster boy for some of Souths’ community work.

However, some at Redfern accepted Roberts would be headed to the Broncos more than a week ago, and quickly moved forward knowing he wouldn’t be in their plans.

Burgess had his NRL contract rubber stamped by the NRL last weekend and will rejoin his teammates in the new year.

Souths have enjoyed a decent off-season, and are considered one of the early title contenders, especially with the addition of powerhouse Pommy forward Burgess.
