A 61-year-old man from Sydney’s southern suburbs has been sanctioned by police over allegations of racial abuse towards South Sydney superstars Cody Walker and Latrell Mitchell.
NSW Police confirmed the man had been issued with an infringement notice for behaving in an offensive manner in or near a public place after a complaint was made during the Rabbitohs game against St George Illawarra on May 11.
It was alleged that the man had directed racial abuse towards Walker and Mitchell, prompting a member of the public to raise the matter with security and then the police. Neither Mitchell nor Walker heard the comments.
The NRL handed out indefinite bans to two spectators following the allegations and the police have now acted against one of the pair.
“About 6.45pm on Saturday 11 May 2024, officers attached to St George Police Area Command were on duty at a sport stadium on Princes Highway, Kogarah, when it was reported that a man had made racial comments towards players,” a police statement said.
“Police were informed that the man had been removed from the venue. Following inquiries, police spoke to a 61-year-old man at Cronulla on Saturday 1 June 2024.
“He was issued an infringement notice for behave in offensive manner in/near public place.”
