Star halfback Kirra Dibb masterminded a remarkable comeback performance to lead the Cowboys to their first win in the NRLW.
The Cowboys led the Knights 12-10 at halftime at Belmore Sports Ground, but in the 42nd minute were reduced to 12 players when April Ngatunpuna was sent to the sin bin after her shoulder made contact with Newcastle halfback Jesse Southwell’s head.
Southwell played on, and Newcastle ran in two tries while Ngatunpuna was off the field.
But Dibb proved why she is considered one of the leading halfbacks in the NRLW with a display which has left Blues fans wondering why she wasn’t involving in Origin this year.
Vitalina Naikore was the first benefactor in a remarkable comeback in which the Cowboys scored four tries in the final 15 minutes.
Dibb played a key role in the comeback.
The Cowboys levelled the score after Bree Chester scored on the hour, then Dibb kicked a field goal just a few minutes later to put her side in the lead.
North Queensland rolled home with the momentum, with tries to Cairns-born Sareka Mooka and a second to Naikore sealing the historic 31-20 win.
The Cowboys will now look ahead to one of the most anticipated fixtures on the calendar, when they host the Broncos in their first game at Queensland Country Bank Stadium as part of a massive double header in Townsville this Saturday.
